FERRY LOMBOK/ GILI

"Your journey begins at 9am in Padang Bai. Spending the night in this transient port town is highly recommended. By day, crowds of tourists getting on, and off the fast boats between the Gili islands and Bali zip right through the place, but only few spend the night here. So, as busy as this port town makes itself out to be by day, when the last fast boat from the Gili islands offloads passengers at Padang Bai’s harbour, its charming beach falls utterly quiet and desolate."

Padang Bai

Padang Bai is a small traditional village in Bali in eastern Bali. It is home to the many fast boats, flying to the many Indonesian islands, such as Lombok and Gili Trawangan. There are several "fastboat companies" (about 18), departing daily to the islands. Prices range from 25 to 55 dollars for a crossing to the Gili Islands. When you go, take care of safety on board the boat (life jackets and the like). With these fastboats only people can carry their luggage. Depending on the boat, 30 to 100 people can join. The fastboat ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The ferry to Lombok will depart from Padang Bai every hour, but loading and unloading may take longer. On this boat everything goes with it: from moped to truck. The boat trip takes about 4 hours and arrives in Lembar on Lombok. You can also choose your own cabin, but you have to pay some more money. The cabin is clean and comfortable with 2 or 3 beds. There is a ticket office, departure hall and a small coffee café next to the pier.
There are also fastboats to Lombok, but they only carry passengers with their luggage. As a general safety measure, it is advisable not to take the ferry if there are bad weather conditions.

The best way is to buy bustickets for you reach your the destination on Lombok. It saves you a lot of discussion with touts of competing bus companies when you have to look for a bus in Lembar. Keep in mind your luggage when you go on or off the boat. There are some idiots asking for carrying your luggage. So do not hand out your luggage or make beforehand a clear pricing agreement.
Another warning when you arrive in Lembar Harbour: There is a police checkpoint on arrival at the port. When you come by car, they ask for an international driving license and the registration of the car. The international driving license also applies to a motorbike. Photocopies are not always tolerated. For vehicles rented, one is more flexible. Make sure you always wear your licence and registration with you.

After the checkpoint the lanes for scooters, cars or trucks are clearly indicated by signs (with image). Some fastboat companies give a safety instruction in advance.

Although Padang Bai is a very busy port with tourists, it is a destination that is quickly overlooked by tourists. However, Padang Bai is worth a visit. Most visitors stay for an hour in Padang Bai: at the port or in a small cafe where they wait for their fast boat to leave. Most tourists do not see the beauty of Padang Bai.
Just like the Gili Islands, Padang Bai is home to many fishing boats and "Diving Boats", parked offshore. It is easy for a tourist to organize a trip with a local fishing boat. Hundreds of tourists pass each Padang Bai on their way to their next Indonesian island, so almost every locals who work in Padang Bai can speak English.
